Cal Petersen is a current National Hockey League. Drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the 5th round, 129th overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft, Petersen developed his goaltending skills through the U.S. hockey system, eventually playing college hockey at the University of Notre Dame. Petersen chose not to sign with the Sabres and instead became a free agent, signing with the Kings in 2017. Petersen impressed in the AHL with the Ontario Reign, earning a call-up to the Kings in 2018. He quickly showed his potential at the NHL level, gaining attention for his composure, athleticism, and ability to stay calm under pressure. After a few seasons as the Kings’ backup, he was seen as a potential starter for Los Angeles.
However, in recent years, Petersen has faced some inconsistency in his play, which led to him being sent to the AHL and, eventually, traded to the Philadelphia Flyers as part of a 2023 multi-player deal. With the Flyers, Petersen is aiming to re-establish himself as a solid goaltender in the NHL, showcasing his skills and resilience as he works to regain a full-time role.
