Semyon Varlamov is a current National Hockey League goaltender with the New York Islanders. Varlamov was selected by the Washington Capitals in the 1st round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with the Capitals during the 2008-2009 season and quickly made an impression with his athleticism and agility in the crease. During his time with the Capitals, Varlamov split goaltending duties and showcased his potential as a top-tier goaltender. He played a significant role in the Capitals' playoff runs during his tenure with the team. In 2011, Varlamov was traded to the Colorado Avalanche, where he became the team's primary starting goaltender. He thrived in this role, earning nominations for the Vezina Trophy and helping the Avalanche qualify for the playoffs multiple times. Varlamov signed with the New York Islanders in 2019 and again in the summer of 2023, Varlamov signed a 4 year, $11 million contract extension with the Islanders. However, this season, Varlamov has been sidelined while recovering from two knee replacement surgeries but was recently cleared to resume on-ice practice in preparation for the upcoming season.
