Toronto Pads

Curtis Joseph known affectionately as “CUJO,” was one of the most exciting and resilient goaltenders in NHL history. Born on April 29, 1967, in Keswick, Ontario, Joseph carved out an incredible 19-season NHL career defined by jaw-dropping saves, fierce competitiveness, and an unmistakable snarling dog mask that became iconic. Undrafted out of college, Joseph defied the odds by signing with the St. Louis Blues in 1989. He quickly made a name for himself with his acrobatic style and ability to carry teams on his back. Over the years, he played for several teams—including the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, Phoenix Coyotes, and Calgary Flames—earning a reputation as one of the best goalies never to win a Stanley Cup. Joseph ranks among the NHL’s all-time leaders in wins, retiring with 454 victories, which currently places him among the top 10 in league history. He also holds the record for most career wins by a goaltender who never won a Cup. But more than numbers, Cujo was known for stealing games—especially in the playoffs—where he often turned in legendary performances, particularly during his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
